Hurriyat Chairman Returns, Placed Under House Arrest

Srinagar: Accusing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of indulging in Machiavellian politics, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani lashed out at the state government for putting him under house arrest on his arrival here from New Delhi on Monday.
“In line with the Machiavellian politics of his party National Conference, on one hand Omar Abdullah condemns the attack by rightwing groups on me in New Delhi but puts me under house arrest as soon as I am back to Kashmir,” Geelani said while addressing party members at his Hyderpora residence.
“Pro-India parties remain the biggest hurdle in the resolution of Kashmir issue. When they have to garner votes, they talk of political resolution of Kashmir issue but later justify India’s illegal occupation of Kashmir,” he said
“While Hindu extremists are following their perceived national interest in opposing us , the role of Kashmiri pro-India leaders is more unfortunate. Despite being Kashmiris themselves they are causing harm to the national cause of Kashmiris,” Geelani said.
He said National Conference, People’s Democratic Party, Congress and other Kashmiri pro-India parties were the two sides of the same coin and were causing “more harm to our national cause than BJP, Shiv Sena.”
“These are the people who are trying to prolong India’s illegal occupation of Kashmir by providing justification to it,” he said.
Geelani also reiterated the boycott call for upcoming Urban Local Bodies elections. “India uses elections as a weapon against our freedom movement, presenting the process as an alternate to Kashmiris’ right to self determination on international forums,” he said.
