PM’s visit: Separatist leaders put under house arrest

Srinagar, Jul 4: Many separatist leaders, including chairman of both the faction of Hurriyat Conference (HC), have been put under house arrest ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kashmir today.

A heavy contingent of State Police raided the Maisuma Residence of Hurriyat leader and People’s Political Party (PPP), Chairman, Engineer Hilal Ahmad War today early in the morning around 4:30 a.m. immediately after morning prayers and arrested the party Chairman Hilal Ahmed War, Party  spokesman  said.

He said these leaders were not being allowed to move out of their houses as a precautionary measure.
The Chairman of the breakaway HC, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, remained under house arrest since his return from New Delhi in April this year, spokesman of the hurriyat Aiyaz Akbar said.

A Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) spokesman said its chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik was arrested from his Maisuma residence.

A spokesman for the moderate HC said, amalgam chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and other senior leaders Mouvi Abbas Ansari, Aga Syed Hussain and Prof Abdul Gani Bhat have been put under house arrest since last night.

He said besides himself (Aiyaz) Mohammad Ashraf Sehrayee, Altaf Ahmad Shah and Dr G M Ganie have also been put under house arrest since last night.
He alleged that hundreds of hurriyat activists were taken into preventive custody during the past 24 hours across the valley.
Two senior separatist leaders Shabir Ahmad Shah, chairman of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) and Nayeem Ahmad Khan, president of National Front (NF) have also been put under house arrest.
