New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today sought to assure the Lok Sabha that the Government was committed to the development of civil nuclear energy, saying there would be no compromise on safety of power plants.
Replying to Shiv Sena member Anant Geete’s question on the potential terrorist threat to the west coast in general and to the upcoming nuclear power plant in Jaitapur in Maharashtra, Dr Singh said, ” We are committed to developing civil nuclear energy.” Emphasising that there would be no compromise on the safety of
the civil nuclear power plants, Dr Singh said safety standards at Jaitapur would conform to the best parameters in the world. Referring to terrorist threats, Dr Singh called for a “holistic approach” to countering them and said, “We cannot put a stop to our economic progress and development due to such threat. All security
precautions will be taken there”.
