Srinagar: In a significant development, opposition party, People’s Democratic Party Sunday said that it will not participate in the upcoming Panchayat elections to be held in Jammu and Kashmir, January next year.
This was announced by its president, Mehbooba Mufti while addressing party workers in Jammu. She said that ‘conditions are not conducive to hold the Panchayat elections’.
“PDP will oppose the polls as conditions aren’t conducive for holding the elections,” she said.
This comes five days after Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah had said that non-party basis Panchayat elections in the state would root out corruption in the state and help in transfer of power to the grass root level.
Mufti criticized government for not taking ground situation into consideration saying, “government hadn’t taking into consideration the ground realities and is moving ahead with the Panchayat polls in a bid to run over the public mood.”
