Colombo: Today, Pakistan defeated Australia by four wickets in their last Group ‘A’ match of the ICC Cricket World Cup. The upset victory ended Australia’s 34-game unbeaten streak in the Cricket World Cup.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the defending champions were all out for a modest 176 runs in 46.4 overs.
Chasing 177 for a win, Pakistan surpassed the target by making 178 for six in 41 overs. Umar Akmal who remained unbeaten on 44 was declared Man of the Match.
Both the sides had already qualified for the quarter-finals. With today’s win, Pakistan top Group “A’ with 10 points, while Australia with nine points finished third. Sri Lanka who also have nine points are second on net run rate. New Zealand are fourth with eight points.
In the quarter-finals, Pakistan will play the fourth-ranked side from Group ‘B’. The placings in Group ‘B’ will be decided after the match between India and West Indies in Chennai tomorrow.
All India Radio will broadcast live commentary on the India versus West Indies Day-Night encounter. The commentary can be heard on Rajdhani Channel and FM Gold from 2 P.M. onwards.
In tomorrow’s Day Fixture, Kenya will meet Zimbabwe in Group ‘A’ at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Both teams are already out of the competition.
