Save the Children’s work presents holistic view on the subject
JAMMU: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Monday afternoon released a book published by NGO Save the Children titled Orphaned in Kashmir.
The book gives comprehensive details about the state of orphans in Jammu and Kashmir. Based on characteristics of sample households, the book deals with the subjects of prevalence of orphans, their socio-demographics, profile, psycho-social effects, institutional settings and the support they are receiving. The book also provides recommendations towards a road map for better orphanage care.
Talking to the Members of Save the Children Organization, the Chief Minister said that government is keen to ameliorate the lot of orphans, widows and destitute in the State. He said a number of initiatives are being carried forward in this regard in the social welfare sector.
“We would like to work with NGOs and other organizations in this field to help develop a long term support mechanism for these categoriesâ€, he told the them adding that the need of hour is to dovetail the programmes aimed at benefiting these sections of the society.
Present on the occasion were Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, B. B. Vyas, Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare, Jeet Lal Gupta, J&K State Programme Manager of Save the Children, Mohammad Sharief Bhat, Chief Functionary National Development Fund, Rajeev Khajuria and other Members of the Organization.
