Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed his government’s resolve to transfer power to the Panchayats to the maximum and strengthen the system of governance at the grassroots.
Noting that holding election to the Panchayats is easier than transferring powers to these democratic institutions, Omar said, “However, I am keen and determined to transfer powers to the elected bodies to the extent it is possible.”
Panchayati Raj system is a befitting medium to devolve powers from Secretariat and Assembly to the democratic institutions at lower levels, he said while interacting with elected Panchs and Sarpanchs of Ganderbal constituency.
“It will not only help judicious spending of funds but proper monitoring of schemes,” he added underlining the importance of Panchayati Raj system in curbing corruption.
The Chief Minister highlighted the role of Panchayats in socio-economic transformation and all round development.
