Srinagar: There was no respite from the cold as Western Disturbances (WD) remained active in the region due to which the day has become more chilly though the minimum temperature was above normal in the Kashmir valley.
Because of fresh snowfall early yesterday, the minimum dropped by one degree in Leh and Kargil against what was recorded yesterday. Border town of Kargil recorded coldest night of the season.
A Met department spokespersons said WD, originating in Arabian sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan are active for the past 48 hours.
However, he said, the WD will intensify for seven days from today in the Jammu and Kashmir due to which moderate to heavy snowfall or rain over hills will occur at many places of Pirpanjal ranges in Kashmir division and at a few places over Ladakh and higher reaches of Jammu region.
Today and tomorrow it will further intensify, he said adding light to moderate rain or snow will occur at many places in plains of Kashmir division and rain or thundershowers in Jammu division.
Some places may also receive rather heavy precipitation, he said.
This system is likely to disrupt surface and air transport systems of the state during this period.
Due to cloudy weather, the maximum temperature remained five notches below normal in the past 24 hours; he said adding there will also be no change in the next 24 hours.
However, the minimum was a degree above normal and will slightly improve further.
