Brussels, Apr 3 It is necessary to strengthen military assistance by NATO to Kiev amid problems on the battlefield, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.
“Ukraine has urgent needs; any delay in proving support has consequences on the battlefield as we speak,” Stoltenberg told reporters ahead of the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, adding that the alliance needs to “shift the dynamics of our support [towards Ukraine].”
NATO must ensure reliable and predictable security assistance to Ukraine for the long haul, the chief said, noting that member states should “rely less on voluntary contributions and more on NATO commitments.”
“Therefore, ministers will discuss how NATO could assume more responsibility for coordinating military equipment and training for Ukraine. Anchoring this within a robust NATO framework, we also discuss a multiyear financial commitment to sustain our support,” Stoltenberg added.
