Nasir inaugurates Reformation Block at Kot Balwal jail

JAMMU: Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani this morning inaugurated a Reformation Block at Kot Balwal jail offering a range of activities for the inmates.

The Reformative block is comprised of Yoga Mediation Hall, Physical fitness Centre, Physical Fitness Centre and Skill Development Centre.
Director General Police, Mr Ashok Parsad, Principal Secretary Home, Mr. B.R Sharma, Additional Director General, Law & Order, Mr. K. Rajindra, Director General Prison, Mr. Naveen Aggarwal, DIG, Prison, Mr. Mohammad Sultan Lone, Jail Superintendent, Mrs. Rajni Sehgal and other senior officers of Police and Prison department were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, The Minister said that the centre was established to keep the inmates engaged in progressive activities for their emotional, psychological and physical transformation.
He said the centre would offer a range of activities for the prisoner to make them busy and prepare them to face the challenge after they were released.
“The inmates will be imparted vocational training in various trades, including skill development in handicrafts, carpenter, embroidery, handloom besides training in computer applications. The centre has also a provision for music and singing teaching ” , he added .
The Minister said that the centre has also a Yoga and Physical fitness centre where the inmates would be trained in meditation and physical exercise- the tested activity for stress management and psychological transformation.
Listing the other facilities in the Jail, the Minister appreciated the jail authorities for maintaining a healthy atmosphere with clean premises and providing the inmates diet facilities as per the jail manual.
Referring to the proposal of establishing video conferencing set up in the jail, the Minister said that the same was under the consideration of the government as it is a good concept for facilitating the meeting of the inmates with their families.
Later, the Minister also inaugurated a Conference Hall in the Jail premises, where the minister also chaired a meeting to review the functioning of Prison Department.
The meeting was informed that at present there are 2632 persons lodged in fourteen jails of Jammu and Kashmir against the total capacity of 2991. The meeting was also informed that the authorities have also introduced free legal aid facilities to the under trials who cannot afford their private councils. (KMW News)
