Madrid, May 5 British tennis player Andy Murray has withdrawn from Madrid Open round-16 match against Serbia’s Novak Djokovic due to illness, the organisers said on Thursday.
Taking to Twitter, the organisers said: “Unfortunately, Andy Murray is unable to take to the Manolo Santana Stadium due to illness. We wish you a speedy recovery!”
Murray defeated the 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and registered a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the second round to set up meeting with the Serb.
Murray is a two-time Madrid Open champion, triumphing in 2008 (on hard) and 2015 (on clay). He last competed at the Caja Magica in 2017 and had planned to skip the clay-court season this year before taking a wild card into the event.
