New Delhi: Amidst BJP uproar on the Coalgate issue, the Monsoon session of Parliament ended in a washout with the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha being adjourned sine die today.
Turmoil and chaos marked the proceedings on the 13th consecutive and last day of the session.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned till noon before being adjourned sine die.
The Rajya Sabha witnessed two adjournments before curtains fell on the Monsoon Session.
Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the Lok Sabha sine die at 1205 hrs, minutes after the House reassembled in the post-Question Hour session at 1200 hrs, thereby concluding one of the most unproductive sessions in the annals of the Lower House.
With more than half of the session recording almost no business, marred by protests and pandemonium, the Monsoon Session was chiefly the victim of Coalgate issue where the Opposition demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over lack of transparency in coal blocks allocation under him.
While the BJP-led NDA demanded Dr Singh’s resignation over the Coalgate issue which allegedly led to the exchequer losing Rs 1.86 lakh crore as per the CAG estimates, the AIADMK staged a vehement protest over newspaper reports on Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s land grab issue in Tamil Nadu involving his family.
A section of Congress members shouted ‘BJP, bahar jao, bahar jao’ (BJP go out) in response to their ‘Pradhan Mantri istifa do, istifa do’ (Prime Minister resign) Members from Tamil Nadu also displayed placards near the well of the House demanding revocation of the permission to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse to attend a Buddhist function later this month in Madhya Pradesh.
The Speaker did not read the customary details of the House’s functioning during the session. Instead, the House was adjourned sine die soon after members sang the national song ‘Vande Mataram’.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Jaipal Reddy, from the government side and BJP Parliamentary Party Chairman L K Advani, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Karia Munda, former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha from the main Opposition BJP sat through the proceedings.
