Srinagar:  Stating that the Kashmir issue was a legacy of its ertswhile Indian Empire, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Friday asked Britain to ensure a peaceful and early resolution of the 63-year-old problem as that country was “morally and politically obliged to do so.”“ Since the Kashmir issue is basically a creation of British( rule in India,) and continues to remain unresolved for the last 63 years primarily due to India’s intransigent and expansionist approach , Britain has a political and moral responsibility of using its influence for a peaceful solution of the issue through dialogue,” Mirwaiz said during his interaction with a delegation of British diplomats— comprising British High Commissioner to India, Sir Richard Stagg, First Secretary, Alex Bamford   and Political Adviser, Sushil Aaron— at his Nageen residence today.“The visiting delegation assured Mirwaiz that Britain was constantly monitoring the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and that the country was hopeful of a just and peaceful solution to the issue, which would be acceptable to all the parties to the dispute,” the amalgam said in a statement issued.“During the detailed meeting, Mirwaiz also apprised the British diplomats about the dictatorial tactics of the government to suppress the sentiments and aspirations of Kashmiris through brute force, including the curbs on peaceful gatherings such as the May 21 rally at Eidgah,” the statement said.Meanwhile, the amalgam has strongly condemned the house arrest of Mirwaiz and several other pro-freedom leaders today. “    Once again the government has shown its frustration by not allowing Mirwaiz to offer prayers at Jamia Masjid and placing him and other leaders under house arrest,” a spokesman said.
