Srinagar: Hours after Union Home Minister P Chidambaram concluded his Kashmir visit, a fierce gunbattle broke out this evening between militants and security forces in Sopore town of Baramulla district in which an ultra was killed and a civilian wounded.
Acting on a tip-off that some militants were hiding near Ahad-bab-morh area in the town, security forces cordoned off the place, official sources said.
When a joint team of army and police zeroed in on the militants who had taken shelter in a house, the ultras fired at them, they said.
In the resultant gunbattle, a militant was killed and a civilian, who was caught in the cross-fire, was injured.
The gunfight was still on, the sources said.
Chidambaram, who reviewed the security situation in Kashmir Valley at a high-level meeting, visited the north Kashmir town of Baramulla earlier in the day.
