Srinagar: A major tragedy was today averted when a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in Qazigund area was detected and defused by the security forces today.
Official sources said that a Road Opening Party (ROP) of security forces detected an IED planted by militants on roadside at Vassu Qazigund on the highway this morning.
Traffic on the highway was stopped from both sides and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) summoned.
Later the IED was defused by the BDS without causing any damage; they said adding traffic on the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was put through.
Had it not been detected and defused it would have caused much damage, the sources said.
