Srinagar: A major tragedy was averted when a live grenade was detected and defused while one person was injured in a mysterious blast during a marriage function in the Kashmir valley, official sources said here this afternoon.
They said a live hand grenade was detected near a poultry farm at Trehgam in the frontier district of Kupwara.
The area was immediately cordoned off and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was summoned, they said adding that the grenade was defused without causing any damage.
A police spokesman said one Majid Majeed Padder was injured when a blast took place during a marriage function at village Zalangam, Kokernag, in south Kashmir district of Anantnag.
He said the blast has reportedly caused by an explosive device which remained unexploded during an encounter between militants and security forces in 2003.
The injured Padder was rushed to local hospital from where he was referred to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here.
However, police has registered a case and initiated proceedings, he said.
