Srinagar: Coming down heavily on the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah for linking Kashmiris indigenous movement with Naxalites, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq Saturday said that the government was burying its head in the sand instead of accepting the reality.
“We reject the statement of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah linking Kashmiri struggle with Naxalites. The statement is a well knit conspiracy to defame the indigenous movement of people of Jammu and Kashmir,†Mirwaiz, who is continuously under house arrest at his Nigeen residence told newsmen this afternoon.
“Was Wamiq Farooq, Zahid Farooq or Tufail Matoo Naxalites from Bengal or Jharkhand? They were innocent students who were shot dead. 115 Kashmiris were killed in the last five months, how many of them were Naxals,†he added.
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah at a function in New Delhi on Friday had said that the Valley militants and the Maoists, Left-leaning academicians and supporters had “visible and invisible linksâ€.
The Hurriyat Chairman said that by giving such statements, the government was burying its head in the sand. Kashmir movement, Mirwaiz said has a historical and legal perspective and thus can’t be compared with other struggles.
“I’ll not be surprised, if Chief Minister tomorrow claims that the people who lost their lives in the last five months were Al-Qaida men and were trained for street protests,†he added.
Accusing New Delhi and the state government of interfering in religious affairs, Mirwaiz said that he was not allowed to offer prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid for the last ten Fridays. He said the government went ahead by placing a Mirwaiz under house arrest of Eid.
“It’s unfortunate that in the history of Kashmir, Mirwaiz was prevented from offering Eid prayers. The institution of Mirwaiz is religious, but at the same time let me make one thing very clear. As far as Islam is concerned, politics and religion are inseparable. When we say Islam is a complete way of life, it includes politics, religion, society and economics,†he said, adding “Even in the largest congregation of Muslim in Arafat recently, the head priest spoke about various issue ranging from politics and religion,â€
“I condemn this action as a complete interference in religious affairs of the Muslims. Jammu and Kashmir remains a Muslim majority state. They (Government) can’t take any action which is against the interests of the people. They can’t force the Muslims of Kashmir to abandon their Islamic rituals. They can’t force them to stay indoors,†he said.
Referring to Amarnath Yatra, Hurriyat Chairman said that Kashmiris extended full support and cooperation for the peaceful conduct of the Yatra even when the whole Valley was in flames. He said not even a single Yatri was touched by the protesters.
“The smooth conduct of Yatra speaks volumes about the tolerance of the people of Kashmir. Where is the tolerance of the government who impose sanctions, curfew and restrictions to prevent us from offering religious obligations,†he said.
“We understand that Jammu and Kashmir is virtually a police state. Police and paramilitary forces have taken over the government. We warn government of India and the puppet regime to refrain from interfering in our religious affairs,†he added.
On this occasion, Mirwaiz announced to launch a campaign against the religious interfere by the government. He said he will take a trip to New Delhi next week to meet the ambassadors of various Islamic nations and to apprise them about the ground situation in Valley. He said he’ll also take up the issue with head priest of Kaaba and the organization of Islamic countries (OIC).
“We also urge Muslim community and their leadership across the globe to see the ground reality and impress upon India to put an end to the political rights and religious duties of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,†he added.
Lashing out at government for the unabated human rights violations, Mirwaiz said that government was resorting to suppressive acts to curb the popular sentiment. He said the detained youth in jails were being lured to give statements against each other.
“Government is trying to damage the social fabric with force. They’re trying to corrupt the society by encouraging spying,†he added.
Charging ruling National Conference with political vengeance, Hurriyat Chairman said that the measures adopted by ruling government to suppress the sentiment in Kashmir proves its lust for power.
“We’re ready to fight with pro-India parties on principles and political ideology. However, the government is using paramilitary forces, police and force to suppress the sentiment. This is nothing else, but revenge politics,†he said.
“I want to remind Chief Minister that the founder of NC, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah used Muslim religious places, particularly Hazratbal shrine to propagate his political ideology,†he said.
Asking India to shun its rigidity and start a sustained and result oriented dialogue process with all the stake holders, Mirwaiz said that bilateral talks between India and Pakistan and India and Kashmiris have failed. He said peace will not prevail in the region unless Kashmir issue is resolved according to wishes and aspirations of the people.
“The oppressive acts like arrests, detentions and unabated human rights violations can’t deter the people of Kashmir. Government looks at normalcy, talk of peace. We want to make it clear that we don’t want peace, but a solution of the Kashmir dispute,†he added.
Mirwaiz also expressed satisfaction over the recent developments, particularly the statement of Iran’s spiritual leader Imam Khamenai. He said the world community was finally waking up to the Kashmir issue.![1258125130695-hurriyat conference chairman](data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHdpZHRoPSIzMDAiIGhlaWdodD0iMjE1IiB2aWV3Qm94PSIwIDAgMzAwIDIxNSI+PHJlY3Qgd2lkdGg9IjEwMCUiIGhlaWdodD0iMTAwJSIgZmlsbD0iI2NmZDRkYiIvPjwvc3ZnPg==)
