Hyderabad: Life came to a standstill across Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region on Tuesday as a two-day shutdown called by the Telangana Joint Action Committee evoked good response in Hyderabad and nine other districts.
Hundreds of commuters were stranded as public transport went off the roads. Shops, business establishments and educational institutions were closed to press the Centre to table a bill in the Parliament to carve out a separate state.
Tension at Osmania University
Barring tension on Osmania University campus and stray incidents in the state capital, the 48-hour long bandh was peaceful.
At Osmania University, the nerve centre of the separate state movement, police lobbed teargas shells to disperse students when they tried to take out a rally to enforce the bandh. Students began a rally from the Arts College but were stopped by police at NCC Gate as curfew had been imposed in many parts of the city.
Students retaliated by pelting stones at the police, including the Rapid Action Force personnel.
Police arrested TDP dissident MLAs N Janardhan Reddy and Harishwar Reddy at university gate, preventing them from entering the campus in violation of prohibitory orders.
There were no APSRTC bus services in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad causing inconvenience to commuters.
South Central Railway cancelled local trains in Hyderabad and Secunderabad as a precaution.
City Police Commissioner A K Khan said the situation was under control adding that additional forces would be deployed if the situation warranted. (With Agency Inputs)
