Srinagar: A meeting of KUSU was held on Saturday wherein the week from 24 September-30 September was declared as black week in wake of the president of India’s visit to the campus on the eve of Annual convocation. Also the students of Kashmir University have unanimously decided to boycott the event.
Black arm bands will be worn and black flags hoisted in the campus as a mark of protest. President of India is the head of Indian armed forces who have perpetrated gruesome war crimes against the Kashmiris; from killings to rape to torture. In the wake of this stark reality it is highly gross and pathetic on part of the university authorities have the president of India as a chief guest in the event. J&K is an internationally recognized dispute pending settlement and the visit of Indian President is unethical and highly uncalled for, especially at KU. It is yet another tragedy and a blot on a prestigious institute like University of Kashmir.
Hostels in the campus have been vacated only to be replaced by troops while the scholars and students stand displaced. The classes have been suspended for 3 days in wake of the convocation, making the students suffer. Also the campus has been turned into a garrison causing much inconvenience to the students. It is yet another example of the totalitarianism of the administration and its priority of abiding by the hegemonic state diktat. Annual convocation at KU was supposed to be a purely academic event celebrating academic excellence; however it has been turned into a political event for furthering Indian state’s interests.
