Kashmir shuts against killings

Srinagar, Sep 17(KMW): A shutdown was observed across Kashmir on Monday following the Joint Resistance Leadership shutdown call against the killing of a civilian and five militants in South Kashmir.

All the shops, business establishments, and educational institutions remained closed while the public transport also remained off the roads in civil lines and uptown Srinagar though private vehicles, besides cabs and three-wheelers, were seen plying on different routes.

The shutdown call was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprised of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, and Muhammad Yasin Malik across Kashmir against the killing of a civilian and four militants in Chowgam area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Train service across Kashmir was also suspended on both Srinagar to Baramulla and Srinagar to Banihal track as “precautionary measures”.

Reports from across tunnel said that Banihal town also observed a complete shutdown to mourn the killings of five militants and a civilian in Chowgam Kulgam. Shops and business establishments remained shut in whole Banihal town.

Shutdown was also observed in other parts of Kashmir besides Srinagar city including Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, Pampora, Qazigund, Tral, Kangan, Handwara and other areas.

A Police official said that situation remained peaceful across Valley.
