Srinagar: The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was again closed for traffic following fresh snowfall since early this morning.

Snowfall was reported at Banihal, Qazigund, Jawahar tunnel and other areas, official sources said.

They said the road had become slippery due to snowfall and it was decided to close the highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.

This is for the second time that Highway was closed for traffic due to snowfall this month.

They said hundreds of trucks, loaded with essentials and empty oil tankers and other heavy vehicles which were stranded on the Highway, have been cleared yesterday, when no fresh vehicle was allowed from Jammu or Srinagar.

Today it was decided to allow vehicles, including those carrying passengers from Jammu to Srinagar.

However, due to snowfall no vehicle was allowed, they said, adding decision to allow traffic will be taken only after the weather improves.

Hundreds of far-flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) remained cut off from the district and tehsil headquarters due to snowfall.

Sadhna and Razdan passes, connecting border towns of Keran, Karnah, Machil, Teetwal and Neeru also remained closed due to heavy snowfall. Both the passes will reopen only in April or May this year.

The Ladakh region also remained cut off from the rest of the state due to closure of Zojila pass, where more than ten feet of snowfall was recorded this month. (KMW News)
