Justice still far away in Asiya and Neelofar Shopian case

12 years since Asiya and Neelofar died, Shakeel Ahangar’s fight for justice is unrelenting. He has made it clear ‘I will fight for my sister and wife until my last breath.”

After the initial investigation, on the direction of Omar Abdullah led government, Justice Jan Commission was formed to deliver the justice. The report by the commission concluded that the two women have been raped and murdered by ‘men in uniform’. Later on, a number of Indian investigative agencies came into the scene only to spoil the broth.

The Shopian rape and murder case is the abduction, rape and murder of two young women allegedly by local indian army. in mysterious circumstances between 29 and 30 May 2009 at Bongam, Shopian district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Two women who were sisters-in-law went missing from their orchard on the way home on 29 May 2009. The next day morning, their bodies were found both one kilometer apart. Local police rejected the allegations saying that the women appeared to have drowned in a stream.”
Shopian case testified the heartless approach of those at helm of affairs with reference to gross human rights abuses .
Whole Shopian and Kashmir had been burning in year 2009 as aftermath of this great tragedy with many innocent protesters killed by state forces .

In year 2009 noted Network Newyork times had written :” The case had all the hallmarks of a grisly and politically explosive crime, and it plunged the volatile Kashmir Valley into months of violent protests and political turmoil. Two young women were found dead in May in a stream flanked by military and police camps, and doctors who performed autopsies said that they had been raped and murdered.

The pain and trauma that the family of Asiya and Neofar have seen has been met with injustice, with grief struck families given no justice by the State .

Many globally reputed human rights groups have from time to time called for impartial probe into this gruesome episode and punishing the guilty .

The nutshell is that even after 12 years Asiya and Neelofar await justice .
