The Joint Traders Association (JTA), an amalgam of 14 city center markets, led by President Farhan Kitab (who is also heading the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Kashmir chapter) and General Secretary Muzaffar, extends heartfelt congratulations to Jinab Omar Abdullah on his appointment as the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.

The association fondly recalls the exceptional leadership shown by Omar Abdullah during the 2014 floods when he stood by the shopkeepers, sharing their pain and offering much needed support. We remain hopeful that under his leadership, the revival of trade will be a priority, especially given the declining footfall in the city center.

Among the pressing issues that we wish to bring to the attention of the Chief Minister are:

Trade Tax: We urge a review of the current trade tax policies. It is essential that the trader community, as key stakeholders, be included in discussions to ensure a fair and inclusive tax system.

Shops and Establishment Act: This outdated act needs urgent amendments to foster ease of business and align with modern trade practices. Revisions will help in streamlining operations for traders across the region.

Transport Services: The restricted entry of transport services into the city center has contributed to a significant drop in footfall. We request a relaxation of these restrictions to boost business and bring life back to the city’s commercial hubs.

Allotment of Roadside Parking Space: The limited availability of roadside parking has been a major issue affecting businesses. We appeal for the allotment of additional parking space to accommodate the growing number of visitors, which will in turn help increase footfall and support trade activities.

We look forward to engaging with the new government on these matters and remain optimistic that the issues of the trade community will be addressed with urgency and empathy.
