Srinagar, May 3(KMW): The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or just World Press Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of Press.
In an important meeting held in this regard by the Jammu& Kashmir Young Journalist Association (JKYJA) at its head office in Lalchowk Srinagar under its President Ajaz Ahmad War many diverse issues were discussed with reference to media paradigms in Jammu and Kashmir.
President JKYJA, Ajaz Ahmad War stated on the occasion – “Quality journalism is very much needed as it enables citizens to make informed decisions about their respective society’s development. It also works to expose diverse vices like injustice, corruption and nepotism. We at JKYJA are committed to champion the genuine causes of our young Journalists especially Pay Anomalies and fight whenever they face harassment during coverage. Government should ensure insurance cover for all working journalists on ground zeroâ€
Rameez Makhdoomi, Chief Media Spokesperson JKYJA Stated- “We need journalism for humanity. Young Journalists of Kashmir present hope as they have lot of creativity, positive dynamism and can change all the paradigms of Journalism towards betterment in our part of the world. Restrictions on Freedom of Press are an important challenge facing journalistic fraternity of Kashmir.â€
While expressing his views on the occasion Bilal Furqani , Vice President JKYJA stressed on the young journalists to maintain highest media ethics while reporting and urged upon the policy makers to frame such policies that Journalists get due incentives and respectable earnings for their hard works.
Bilal Bashir Bhat, Treasurer of the JKYJA stated – “Providing better infrastructure, increasing the opportunities for Young Journalists to present their talent is a challenge that should be tackled effectively. A large number of growing Journalist killings since many years globally has been a cause of concern for one and all.â€
Majid Kapra, Organizer of JKYJA Stated- “We need to all appreciate the great efforts rendered by the Journalists of Kashmir despite hardships faced by them. The growth of online media of is a positive development in our part of the world but the need of hour is to formulate policy framework to regulate it.â€
JKYJA also called upon the Government to ensure more freedom of speech to journalists and draw a policy outline to make Journalism an attractive profession in our part of the world.
