Tehran: Iranian Foreign Ministry on Sunday expressed indignation over blasphemous and abhorrent action of NATO troops in Bagram, Afghanistan in desecrating Holy Quran.

‘This is blatant violation of human rights and the international conventions committed by US troops burning copies of the Holy Book and hurting sentiments of Muslims worldwide,’ the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement said that disrespect for religious beliefs of Muslims stem from false understanding of the Afghan people’s culture and religious beliefs of the Muslims worldwide, adding that continued occupation of the Muslim country accounted for systematic violation of human rights and religious beliefs of the Afghan nation.

‘This is not the first time that the International Conventions have been violated by American and NATO troops. Repetition of such satanic behavior emanating from the arrogant nature of the US will bring worldwide indignation and hatred for the US.’

The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the desecration in the strongest term and calls for immediate exit of foreign troops from Afghanistan, a pre-requisite for restoration of peace and security to Afghanistan.

The statement said that prolongation of US troops’ presence in Afghanistan and signing of strategic treaty by Afghanistan and the United States will jeopardize peace and security of the region.

‘The Iranian Muslim nation and government hope that the Afghan people will overcome the current difficulties and make efforts to make good on negative impacts of foreign troops’ presence in the country.’
