Speaking about the just concluded Global meet on Environment & Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Conference at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre in Srinagar (J&K), Kamleshwar Sharan, President of Greentech Foundation added that the meet evoked lot of response from Environment & CSR Professionals from India and overseas. Issues such as Challenges in Implementation of CSR, Role of Social Media in CSR, CSR-Non Financial Reporting, Social Efforts of Indian Army towards environmental protection and conservation etc were deliberated. The conference was supported by Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Government of India.
Mr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, IAS, Secretary (Retd)., Dept. of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Govt. of India lauded the CSR efforts of Corporates and presented ‘Greentech CSR Awards’ to various companies in recognition of their outstanding CSR efforts. ‘12th Annual Greentech Environment Awards’ were presented to various companies by Shri Nawang Rigzin Jora, Tourism & Culture Minister, Govt of J&K and Mr. R.H. Khwaja, IAS, Secretary- Tourism, Govt. of India.
Addressing the gathering Nawang Rigzin Jora said having come this far you know how peaceful is Srinagar, Gulmarg and urged the gathering to convey the same to people around them. He encouraged more tourists to visit Jammu & Kashmir.
Lt. Gen (Retd) Mukesh Sabharwal of Indian Army, in his presentation on Social Efforts of Indian Army towards Environment Protection and Conservation said that approximately one million trees are planted by the Army every year. Army has always shown respect to the nature and the environment and made meaningful efforts in its protection. Today eight Task Forces are functioning under the aegis of the Indian Army. In the last 28 years, these Task Forces have planted approximately 5.5crore saplings in 47,000 hectares of land and also constructed more than 5000 check dams, he informed.
The conference was held at such a time when CSR is increasingly becoming a part of large companies in India. They are increasingly seeing it to be prospering at the expense of the broader community, resulting in an adversarial relationship between business and society. CSR helps inspire leaders and businesses to reconnect with society, to the mutual benefit of both.
Commenting on the theme of the just concluded meet Mr. Sharan said by socially responsible it means that the company’s activities should benefit the society and by environmentally sustainable it means that the activities of the company should not harm the environment.
Many speakers who spoke on Environment and CSR observed that the rise in popularity of ethical consumerism over the last two decades can be linked to the rise of CSR. As global population increases, so does the pressure on limited natural resources required to meet rising consumer demand, they felt. Industrialization, in many developing countries, is booming as a result of both technology and globalization. Consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental and social implications of their day-to-day consumer decisions and are therefore beginning to make purchasing decisions related to their environmental and ethical concerns, they remarked. But, they all opined in unison that very few Indian companies have clear policies on CSR.
