Dhaka, Aug 5 Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced today that an interim government, with the participation of all parties, will be formed after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country for a “safer place”.
In an address to the nation, the army chief said: “After holding a fruitful discussion with all political parties, we have decided to form an interim government. We will speak with President Mohammed Shahabuddin now to resolve the situation,” Dhaka Tribune reported.
He called for a halt to all violence in name of protests and promised that the new government will ensure justice for all the deaths that took place during the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hasina submitted her resignation to President Md Shahabuddin amid a mass uprising that has left several hundred people dead.
She left the country with her sister Sheikh Rehana on Monday afternoon onboard a military helicopter for India, according to reports.
Thousands of people took to the streets celebrating an end to the reign of the country’s longest-serving prime minister.
