United Nations: India will extend its full support to Palestine, which is making its highest diplomatic effort this week at the world body to obtain a full-member status.
Indian envoy to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri, while briefing journalists on the occasion of the ongoing prime ministerial visit to the world body, said last night that the country would back Palestine when it made an attempt for its deserved membership.
“We will support when a resolution is introduced in the General Assembly. We will also back it when it is introduced in the Security Council,” Mr Puri said.
India is currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and it held its presidency for the month of August.
Lebanon is currently heading the 15-member powerful body of the UN and it was to invite a membership attempt by Palestine. But it is widely expected that the United States would use its veto to block Palestine in its effort in gaining the full-member status.
The nation was the first non-Arab country to recognise the rights of Palestinians. It consistently supported its cause on various international forums.
Palestinians currently only have an observer status and their leader Mahmoud Abbas was scheduled to make a full-fledged attempt to obtain for his state a regular member’s status in his speech to be delivered later in the day.
