Srinagar, July 31 : Hurriyat Conference (M) Friday staged a protest rally demanding the immediate release of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in Kashmir and outside jails, against the ill conditions of Kashmiri prisoners, and against the hanging of Yaqub Memon.
While appealing the international human rights organization to intervene and lobby for the release of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in jails, senior Hurriyat (M) leaders including Engineer Hilal Ahmad War, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, Javaid Ahmad Mir, Musadiq Adil, GN Zaki, Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi, Abdul Rashid Untoo, Abdul Majeed Wani, Jaffar Kashmiri, Burhan Rabbani, Mohammad Yaqoob Dar, Umar Pal, Feroze Ahmad, Mushtaq Ahmad and scores of others staged a protest demonstration at Press Colony during which they demanded the immediate release of Kashmiri prisoners and condemned the ill treatment meted out to these prisoners.
The Hurriyat (M) leaders also demanded the return of the mortal remains of Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru who were hanged and buried in Tihar Jail.
During the protest, police used excessive force to disperse the protesters. Senior Hurriyat leaders including Advocate Engineer Hilal War, Javaidd Ahmad Mir, Shahid-ul-Islam and other activists were arrested and lodged in police station Kothi Bagh.
“The police action caused critical injuries to Hurriyat leader Javaid Ahmad Mir who was later shifted to Bone and Joint hospital where a surgery was carried on his badly damaged left hand,” a spokesman of Hurriyat (M) said in a statement to KMW.
He sternly condemned the police action on Hurriyat leaders. “Duch dictatorial action would in no way weaken the resolve and commitment of Kashmiri people and its leadership,” he added.
