Humanity and Voluntary Action vital to Red Cross Movement: Governor

Srinagar, May 8, KMW: Governor N.N. Vohra, who is President of the State Branch of Indian Red Cross Society, participated in the celebrations of World Red Cross Day, held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) here today. The theme of this year’s Red Cross Day is “Fundamental Principles in Action”.
Emphasising the essence of seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Society, the Governor observed that this Movement revolves, among others around the commitment to the principles of Humanity and Voluntary Action which influences and guides Volunteers to render assistance, without discrimination, to the sick, the wounded and those in distress and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found, to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. These Principles, he said, promote mutual understanding, friendship, co-operation and lasting peace amongst all people.
The Governor complimented the State Red Cross Society in rendering valuable aid to the flood affected people in the past year. He said that the humanitarian activities carried out by the IRCS during difficult times are always of high value for the people and the administration. He further observed that services provided by the Red Cross Society Volunteers during disasters and road side accidents are extremely useful.
The Governor, on the occasion, thanked the Volunteers for their selfless services to the humanity. He also complimented participants of the Cyclothon and Painting Competition which had been organized by the Red Cross Society as part of the Red Cross Day celebrations. He thanked the Police Department for its support to these activities.
Earlier, before the start of function, the participants prayed for the victims of the recent Nepal Earthquake.
The Welcome Address, was presented by Ms. Roma Wani, Hon. Gen. Secretary of the State Red Cross Society wherein she highlighted the activities and achievements of the Organization; Mr. A.M. Mir, Member State Managing Committee, spoke about the work of the Red Cross in the State in the past few years and Mr. Hanan Moumin, a Red Cross Volunteer, shared his views and experiences of working with and for the Red Cross.
Present among others were S.M Sahai, ADGP Armed, Prof. Nusrat Andrabi, Member State Managing Committee of Red Cross, prominent citizens, volunteers and students. (KMW)
