Srinagar, 20 January(KMW): People’s Political Party (PPP) Chairmam and senior Hurriyat leader Engineer Hilal War was arrested today a day before the anniversary of Gawkadal Massacre that occurred on January 21, 1990. A posse’ of cops led by SHO Maisuma arrested War from his Maisuma residence. The arrest is seen as a preventive measure by the state to thwart any kind of protest or any other activity in remembrance of the victims of Gawkadal Massacre.
Er. Hila War had given a call for a strict strike in the civil lines area as a mark of respect to the martyrs of 21 January, 1990. War’s PPP had planned a series of programmes for the commemorating the martyrs of the Gawkadal Massacre that included sit-in, speeches and peaceful protests. Talking to the media, War likened the gory event to Jalianwala Bagh massacre saying that India can’t get away with such a gruesome carnage that let loose a litany of massacres throughout the three decades post-90. War was given a zealous send off by his partymen amid sky-soaring pro-freedom slogans before he was whisked away by police.
