Srinagar: After remaining closed for three consecutive days due to landslides, the 300-km Srinagar- Jammu-highway on Wednesday was reopened for one-way traffic.
Reports said that the one-sided traffic on the only road link connecting Valley with rest of the world was resumed after the beacon authorities cleared the landslides on the highway near Digdol, Ramban this morning. After clearing all the stranded vehicles from the opposite sides, the traffic officials allowed Srinagar bound vehicles to ply on the highway.
However, late evening, the movement of traffic was stopped due to shooting stones at some places.
“The highway was reopened for traffic this morning. All the stopped vehicles were cleared and traffic to Srinagar from Jammu was allowed. However, the traffic was stopped in the evening after shooting stones hit a few places on the highway,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Highways, Kifayat Haider said.
A senior beacon official said that men and machinery were pressed into service to clear the highway that was blocked by major landslides near Digdol and Nashri
“The highway was completely blocked at a few places due to which we had to suspended the traffic,” he said, adding, “After the road conditions improved the vehicles that were stopped at various places were allowed to proceed,”
Meanwhile, Jammu correspondent said that Doda-Baderwah and Baderwah- Kishtwar highway was closed after landslides occurred at a few places.
