Srinagar: The 300-km Srinagar- Jammu-highway Monday was opened for two-way traffic after remaining closed for two consecutive days due to snowfall and rains.
Reports said that the two-way traffic on the only road link connecting Valley with rest of the world was resumed this morning. All the passenger vehicles bound to the summer and winter capitals were allowed to ply on the highway after the beacon authorities cleared the highway from blockades at several places. However, the movement of heavy vehicles including trucks and load carriers was restricted till evening
“Two-sided traffic has been restored since morning. All vehicles, including passengers’ buses were allowed to move from both the sides,” a traffic department official told.
A senior beacon official said that the men and machinery were pressed into service to clear the highway that was rendered unsafe by snowfall and rains over the last two days.
“The rains and snowfall had turned the road unsafe for vehicular traffic. After clearing the highway, traffic from both the sides was allowed this morning,” the official added.
