New Delhi, Apr 24: The Election Commission is today deputing a high-level team to Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of a fresh letter sent by the state government, seeking further postponement of Anantnag bypoll, to be held on May 25.The EC team will remain in the state for two days to assess the situation by meeting different stakeholders.
Citing the law and order problem during the Srinagar by-elections on April 9, the state government had urged the EC to defer the Anantanag bypoll, which were earlier to be held on April 12, and the EC taking note of the situation, had decided to hold these polls on May 25. But now with fresh request coming from the state for deferring the polls further, the EC will make fresh appraisal of the situation after its gets the report of the high-level team, according to sources. As many as nine people had been killed during the April 9 Srinagar Lok Sabha bypoll, and only seven per cent voter turn out had been registered. (News Agency)
