New Delhi, July1 The Congress on Friday launched a scathing attack on the BJP after the Supreme Court refused to offer relief to former Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma and said that the apex court’s remarks should make the ruling dispensation hang its head in shame.
“The Supreme Court has held a mirror to this government. The remarks by the SC, which resonate with the entire country, should make the party in power hang its head in shame,” Congress national spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said in a statement.
The party general secretary also said, “It is no secret that the BJP seeks to profit from inflaming communal passions. Today, the SC has strengthened the resolve in every single one of us who are fighting these destructively divisive ideologies”.
The MP said that the Congress “will never cease its fight against polarizing anti-national forces of all types which plunge the nation into chaos for political gains and let all Indian citizens bear the consequences of their perverse actions”.
Nupur Sharma had approached the top court seeking direction for transfer to New Delhi the investigation into nearly a dozen FIRs registered against her in various states over her Prophet remarks that plunged the nation into turmoil.
During the hearing on Friday, the top court observed that her comments were “disturbing”. “What was her business to make these remarks?”
Senior lawyer Maninder Singh, appearing for Nupur Sharma, told the Supreme Court that she had apologized for her comments and withdrawn them immediately.
But an unhappy apex court said: “She should have gone to the TV and apologized to the nation.”
