Srinagar, Jun 30 : A gunfight has broken out between militants and army at Malwari hamlet in Newa area of Pulwama District since today morning.

A senior police officer stated that acting on a tip off about the presence of some militants, army’s 50 RR, CRPF and SOG launched cordon-and-search operation at the Malwari village. The forces, as such, intensified the cordon-and-search operation and fired several warning shots towards the suspected spot, the officer said, adding that the rebels believed to be two to three in number hiding inside the area opened fire, triggering off an encounter. When reports last came in, the gunfight was going on in the area.
Gunfight according to sources comes just 24 hours of visit of Home Minister to Kashmir to review the worsening security situation as there has been surge in militant attacks in Kashmir in recent times.
Soon after the news about the encounter spread in the area, the local youth took to streets and started pelting stones on forces.
