Srinagar: Fresh snowfall was experienced at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg while plains, including summer capital Srinagar, had rains resulting in considerable cold, forcing people to wear woollen and other warm clothes.
Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, a major tourist attraction, was colder than Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region after the minimum dropped to seven degrees below normal this morning following fresh snowfall last night.
After rains, fresh snowfall was experienced on the slopes, much to the delight of tourists, who were not expecting snow during this period of the year, a hotel owner told from Gulmarg.
He said tree and roof tops turned white. However, snowfall was followed by rains, he said adding that it was raining today also.
The upper reaches, including Affarwat, the highest ski point connecting with Cable Car, Kongdori and Khilanmarg also experienced fresh snowfall last night.
The tourists, who had come from plains, where the temperature crossed 45 degrees, were seen enjoying the cold.
The upper reaches elsewhere in north Kashmir, including the areas near the Line of Control (LoC) also experienced fresh snowfall.
Senior Army officers had warned of increase in the infiltration from across the border during summer months after melting of snow. However, this time the routes are under huge snow with the result the fence on the LoC, which was damaged during winter, could not be repaired completely.
More than 500 militants are waiting in launch pads in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) to sneak into this side this summer.
Troops guarding the border have already intensified night and foot patrolling to foil any infiltration bid by militants.
