Srinagar: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani Friday sought a “direct and unequivocal” response from New Delhi to his five demands.
Responding to the chief minister’s statement in which he had said that New Delhi had accepted Geelani’s five demands, the Hurriyat (G) chairman said, “For a conducive atmosphere to resolve the Kashmir dispute, our five demands must be accepted in unambiguous terms. It’s a welcome development if New Delhi has accepted the reality, but on the ground there are no such signs as policy of using force to crush Kashmiris continues.”
Taking a dig at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Geelani said before issuing statements on Kashmir, Omar Abdullah should first take into account his power and position, which, he said, was no better than that of the law enforcing agencies in Kashmir. “Even if he wants to he can’t play any role in resolving the Kashmir dispute,” Geelani said in a statement issued here.
Geelani  said Omar should remember that his grandfather, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was “shown the the worth of being a prime minister by Indian Prime Jawahara Lal Nehru on August 9, 1953, by sending a police constable to arrest him.”
“How can people trust a person who instead of his own people is loyal to India and advocates their position?” Geelani asked.
Geelani also took strong exception to Abdullah’s statement that four of the five demands were within the domain of the state government and were being worked on. “ This is a joke. This government to save its face pleaded with New Delhi to remove AFSPA from a few districts and release some prisoners, but got a rebuke . When the chief minister is not independent to transfer senior state police officers and officials, there is no question of his role in diluting AFSPA or other  powers of  the army.”
Geelani termed Adullah assertion that people had rejected the Hurriyat’s protest calendar as “childish and unreaslisitic.”
Geelani challenged that if things had turned in favour of Omar Abdullah he should come out his security cocoon and   visit cities, towns and villages of Kashmir. “ Otherwise let him lift restrictions from us and allow us to roam freely, he will get to know about the ground situation.”
