Srinagar: Rejecting the stand taken by Darul-Uloom-Deoband regarding Kashmir being an integral part of India, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani Monday asked the Islamic body not to shy away from the “historical” fact that India forcefully occupied an independent Jammu and Kashmir in 1947.
“While the Ulema (clerics) spoke about the excesses committed by India forces, they ignored the root cause of the problem, raising serious questions over the conference itself. The Ulema should have taken into consideration the pledges made by Indian leadership to allow Kashmiri people to decide their future, a right duly endorsed before by the international community,” Geelani said in a statement issued here.
The Hurriyat leader while commenting on Congress’ defence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent accession remarks in the assembly said it had proved speculations about “Abdullah’s speech having been written by New Delhi.
“ The speech was made with New Delhi’s blessings to fool Kashmir people. The National Conference has a history of such political gimmicks. When Sheikh Abdullah buried the Plebiscite Front by the accord with Indira Gandhi in 1975, the party projected it as a change in strategy. Now again when New Delhi is losing its grip over Kashmir,
Omar Abdullah is enacting his part in New Delhi’s drama,” he said.  However, the Hurriyat leader said Kashmiri people cannot be “fooled” anymore like 1975.
He also rejected the demand of more universities in Assembly as useless unless Kashmir remains under Indian occupation. “People particularly those clerics who are welcoming the establishment of this university should first think that the so called rulers are doing
everything in contradiction to the teachings of the great personality in whose name the University is going to be build,” he said.
Meanwhile, Geelani urged people to make the “Hyderpora chalo” peaceful tomorrow and keep the march peaceful.
