Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police has arrested a former district president of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani in a robbery case in Shopian district.
Altaf Ahmad Wafai, who runs a jewellery shop in Shopian district town, yesterday lodged a complaint with police claiming that burglars had broken into his shop and decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs 6.50 lakh, a police spokesman said.
Police began investigations and detained Tariq-ul-Amin, former district president of Tehreek-e- Hurriyat, for questioning, the spokesman said.
“During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and at his instance, ornaments worth Rs 60,000 and some cash were recovered from his residence,” he said.
The spokesman said two associates of Tariq-ul-Amin — Zia-Ul-Haq Ahrar alias Rafi and Junaid were also detained for questioning.
