Elections no plebiscite: Mirwaiz

Srinagar: The Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led Hurriyat Conference while rejecting Indian Foreign Minister, S M Krishna’s statement in the United Nations that plebiscite was held in Jammu and Kashmir after every five years Wednesday said elections held in the state under the constitution of India cannot be a replacement for right to self determination and were held merely for administrative purposes. “Even the United Nations has accepted that elections can have no bearing on the disputed nature of Jammu and Kashmir. India by taking the issue to United Nations itself accepted the disputed nature and is morally and legally bound to resolve this issue through dialouge with Pakistan and the people of Kashmir,” a spokesman said in a statement issued here. The spokesman said the statements of Indian politicians were reflective of India’s traditional stubborn attitude towards kashmir. ” The world community needs to take note of the fact that the Kashmir dispute is straining the relations between India and Pakistan and should pressurize both the countries to find a solution to this festering dispute in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people,” the spokesman added. The spokesman also condemned the imposition of “relentless curfew since Eid that has put the local population at severe hardship.”
