Kolkata, July 12 BJP MP Ravishankar Prasad, leading the four-member fact-finding committee to visit the trouble-torn areas in West Bengal, on Wednesday described as unfortunate the killing of so many people in Panchayat election-related violence.
Prasad commented, ” It is very unfortunate that so many people have been killed in Panchayat election-related violence. It is bad for democracy too.”
” We will get out of Kolkata for rural Bengal, including North Bengal, to meet the people as well as
the victims’ family members. We will take stock of the ground reality and report to Nadda ji,” Prasad added.
The committee will submit its report to the Party National President.
The members of the panel were Ravishankar Prasad, Satyapal Singh, Rajdeep Roy and Rekha Verma.
Earlier, in a series of tweets, Majumdar said, “The recent Panchayat elections in Bengal have exposed a disturbing scene of violence and bloodshed, leaving the nation in shock. BJP workers brutally attacked and killed, even during result announcements.”
Stating this grim reality showcases the dark face of violence under Mamata Banerjee’s regime, Majumdar called for urgent action to restore peace and protect lives.
“Post-election violence erupts again in Bengal, spreading fear among its residents. In Barrackpore, after Panchayat election results were announced, a BJP candidate’s house was vandalized and set ablaze,” he mentioned.
Stating that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee bears responsibility for every such incident, acting as an “indirect enabler” of these violent acts, the BJP MP from Balurghat said, “Diamond Harbour, a chilling model of electoral violence and manipulation. Countless lives have been sacrificed at Diamond Harbour’s polling centers, where the bloodshed serves the sole purpose of securing TMC’s victory.”
“The Election Commission has seemingly morphed into a Pishi-Bhaipo Commission, casting a dark shadow over our democracy,” he alleged.
“The brutal treatment of women during the Panchayat elections under the female Chief Minister’s rule is utterly inhumane. She was targeted for her role as a BJP agent at the counting center, resulting in a vicious assault, clothes torn off, and being thrown out. Even her husband faced a brutal attack,” Majumdar commented.
“Those who speak loudly about democracy, where are they now?” he asked and said, “We must condemn such violence and stand for the rights and safety of women.”
Stating that the elections in Bengal showcased a dark reality of violence and bloodshed, he said, “TMC’s rule of terror was on full display as even the day of result announcements couldn’t escape their grip.”
Alleging that the ruthless murder of Anup Pailan, a candidate for Bishnupur 2 district council, highlights the dire consequences of such a blood-soaked contest, Majumdar iterated that it’s time to stand against this cycle of violence and protect the sanctity of democracy.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress coming down heavily on the Opposition BJP said, ” Unable to win the hearts of Bengal’s people, @BJP4Bengal resorts to REVENGE. In Khejuri, Purba Medinipur, our party workers were BRUTALLY ATTACKED by BJP goons. LoP @SuvenduWB, who claimed to dedicatedly serve the people of Bengal before the elections, is now INCITING VIOLENCE. BJP’s TRUE NATURE stands EXPOSED. “
” The fire of violence, ignited by the Opposition parties, that our candidates and party workers have been smoldering in has continued till the tail end of the panchayat elections, ” the TMC alleged.
“In a tragic incident, Biplab Haldar, our party worker from Chandpasha village in Kashinagar GP of Raidighi AC, South 24 Parganas, was ruthlessly hacked to death by @BJP4Bengal goons. Initially, the BJP resorted to violence in their pursuit of victory but now that we have swept the Panchayat elections and taken an unassailable lead, their actions appear driven by sheer vengeance and retribution, ” the party further charged.
