Srinagar: Curfew remained imposed in all major towns of the Jammu region as the authorities said that apart from a minor incident in Kishtwar the overall situation remained peaceful throughout the region on Monday.
Curfew continued for the fourth day without any relaxation in Kishtwar town, where communal clashes erupted Friday, resulting in death of three people and destruction of public and private property.
Eyewitness told that loudspeaker-mounted security vehicles Monday morning made the announcements in the curfew-bound areas, advising people to remain indoors. The army carried out flag marches Monday morning in curfew-bound areas.
They said that some miscreants torched a vehicle in Domana area of Jammu citySunday, where slogan-shouting protesters also burnt tyres at some places.
Reports reaching to news agency from Poonch said that a peace march was carried out by members of both the communities in Poonch town Sunday to assert centuries-old communal harmony of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources told KNS that atleast six people were injured on Monday in fresh clashes between the protesters and the police in strife-torn Kishtwar town, reports said.
The annual Amarnath yatra remained suspended on Monday as no pilgrim was allowed to proceed to the valley. Meanwhile The Srinagar-Jammu highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the world, remained closed for the third consecutive day as a precautionary measure. Hundreds of passengers besides Amarnath pilgrims remained stranded in different parts of Kashmir.
A senior traffic police officer told that the highway remained closed on Mondayas a precautionary measure. Official sources said that a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, and trucks loaded with fruits are stranded at Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir and other places on this side of the tunnel.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shantmanu told that the situation is tense but under control. “There are no reports of any untoward incident on Monday. Situation is being reviewed regularly and any decision on relaxation of curfew would be based on improvement in situation,†he said.
The Div Com said at least 10 people have been arrested in Kishtwar while dozens others have been arrested in Jammu who were allegedly involved in disrupting the peace. He said in Kishtwar people tried to protest against the arrest but the police dispersed the crowd peacefully.
