Srinagar: Curfew was clamped yet again in the old city areas of Srinagar, summer capital of Indian Kashmir in view of a call given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani led hardline Hurriyat asking people to march towards Eidgah Martyrs Graveyard.
“In order to maintain law and order, curfew was imposed in the areas falling under police stations Nowhatta, Qamarwari, M R Gunj, Safa Kadal and Khanyar. We didn’t want any untoward incident to happen,†a police Officer told.
The proposed march, according to the Hurriyat, was aimed to impress upon the world community for the resolution of Kashmir  as per  people’s aspiration and pay tributes to the ‘martyrs’ killed during the last twenty years by the Indian forces.
All the major roads in the curfewed areas were sealed and people weren’t allowed to venture out of their homes.
Late reports from south Kashmir’s Pulwama suggested that at least two persons were injured when police resorted to pellet firing on protesters in Muran area.
Reports of stone throwing incidents came from North Kashmir’s Baramulla district as protesters and police and paramilitary forces engaged themselves in a ding dong battle.
No injury was reported in the clashes.
Elsewhere in the valley, normal life was disrupted as business establishments, shops and private offices remained closed and public traffic didn’t play on the roads.
Private traffic, however, was seen plying in the uptown areas and other districts of the valley.
Kashmir has witnessed countless curfews and shutdowns ever since the killing of a teenager, Tufail Ahmad Matoo who was hit by a police tear gas shell. Valley has seen 111 civilian killings in the police and paramilitary forces’ action.
Hardline Hurriyat launched ‘Quit Kashmir’ against Indian ‘occupation’ in the state coupled with  numerous calls for  the strikes and protests  and marches to various places, government, on its part, has come down heavily on Hurriyat’s schedule by imposing curfews and restrictions.
