Mumbai, Nov 8 Glenn Maxwell made a record-breaking double century to lift Australia from 91/7 to victory in a run-chase of 292 against Afghanistan here on Tuesday.
Maxwell’s ODI innings was hailed by several as one of the greatest in the history of One Day Internationals. The Australian became the first non-opener to make a double century in the format
in men’s cricket and did so from No.6 with his team in deep trouble.
Former and current cricketers showered Maxwell with praise for playing an all-time great knock that helped Australia book a semi-final spot at the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup
The victory was Australia’s sixth on the trot in the tournament after a less-than-ideal start at the beginning of last month.
Reacting to the knock, Pat Cummins, who was unbeaten on 12 and involved in a double-century stand with Maxwell, said that he thought it was “the greatest ODI innings”.
“We’re just chatting about it, all the players and we’ve decided it’s one of those days where you just go, I was there in the stadium the day Glenn Maxwell chased down that total by himself,” Cummins exclaimed in the post-match press conference.
Australia great Ricky Ponting was lost for words when asked to describe the innings on ICC show Digital Daily.
“It is hard to put into words,” Ponting said.
“Tonight is something we are going to be talking about for a very long time,” he said.
“What an innings like that can do around a team, is that it can create unbelievable belief that you can win from anywhere,” Ponting added.
Adam Gilchrist said,”Congratulations@Gmaxi_32 Clearly the best ODI innings ever. Has always been the most exciting player in the world to watch in my opinion.”
Sachin Tendulkar said,”A wonderful knock by@IZadran18 to put Afghanistan in a good position. They started well in the 2nd half and played good cricket for 70 overs but the last 25 overs from
@Gmaxi_32 was more than enough to change their fortune.”
“From Max pressure to Max performance! This has been the best ODI knock I’ve seen in my life,” he added.
Michael Vaughan said,” The GREATEST ODI innings of all time @Gmaxi_32.. You could say the GREATEST innings of all time .. #CWC2023 #India.”
Wasim Akram said,” This is easily the best ODI innings I have seen recently take a bow @Gmaxi_32.”
Ian Raphael Bishop said,” Glenn Maxwell reminded us tonight about the intrinsic beauty, unpredictability and inspiring drama of this wonderful game. Thank you.”
Virender Sehwag said,”Saw this coming. 200 in a run-chase, One of the all time great one day innings by Maxwell. @Gmaxi_32 was a man possessed and great support by @patcummins30.
An innings to remember for a long long time.”
Venkatesh Prasad said,”Probably one of the greatest One Day innings one would get to see. Glenn Maxwell, absolutely unbelievable . Highest individual score in a run-chase, and when no other Australian crossed 24, a double hundred is incredible.”
