Kolkata: A city court today upheld the order of a lower court reframing charges to include the more serious abetment to suicide against the principal and three teachers of La Martiniere School in the case where a student had hung himself after being caned at the school.
13-year-old Rouvanjit Rawla had been found hanging at his residence on February 12 last, four days after being allegedly caned by Principal Sunirmal Chakravarti for misbehaviour and disobedience.
The chief judge, city civil court, Kolkata, Dipak Saha Roy, rejected the prayer of the four teachers and upheld the order of a metropolitan judge to try them under more serious charges than those earlier framed by the police.
Rouvanjit’s father Ajay Rawla said he was “happy” to hear the judgement.
“This is a strong step in the right direction.
