Srinagar, Jan 21(KMW): The Hurriyat Conference leader and Jammu and Kashmir People’s Political Party (PPP), Chairman, Engineer Hilal Ahmad War had given a strike call in the civil lines areas comprising Maisuma, Gawkadal, Basant Bagh, Mandir Bagh, Red Cross Road, Exchange Road, Budshah Chowk, Lal Chowk, Residency Road, M.A. Road, Abi Guzar, Polo View, Sarai Bala, Court Road, Kukar Bazar , Hari Sigh High Street, Goni Khan etc. of the Srinagar City. The strike call given against the Gawkadal Massacre which took place on January 21, 1990. On the day 52 unarmed people were killed and about 250 sustained bullet injuries at the hands of Indian Security Forces.
Mr. War while was addressing a huge gathering of party at his Maisuma residence which is also his hometown and a stronghold , said, “the Gowkadal massacre is perhaps the first massacre in the history of Kashmir struggle in which signals of massacre were given well before conducting the massacre. On the January 20, 1990 Jagmohan’s first television address as governor of J & K State stunned everyone. It was clear cut provocative address and a direct threat in which Jagmohan said if anybody creates a law and order problem, Meray Haathon say Aman ka patta Khisak jaye ga (the cards of peace I’m carrying will slip away from my hands). And in less than 24-hours the threat was carried out in a brutal manner”.
While paying the homage to Gawkadal Martyrs in the rally, Mr. War said, “The Gawkadal Massacre was a well thought plan of the then Govt. of India which was aimed at paving the way for Kashmiri Pundit’s exodus from Kashmir”. It is pertinent to mention here that the conspiracy of Kashmiri Pundits’ exodus was hatched by the then Governor of J & K, Mr. Jagmohan. PPP Chief demanded the arrest of those who were responsible for the massacre. And further demanded that the conspirators be unmasked and punished.
Mr. War further said that If Mr. Omar Abdullah is sincere about his much talked about ‘ Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ he has now the golden opportunity to start the Truth and Reconciliation Commission by punishing the killers and conspirators of Gawkadal Massacre .
Mr. War thanked the people of Civil Lines Area and Traders fraternity for observing complete shutdown and showing solidarity with the martyrs of Gowkadal and sympathy with PPP.
