Srinagar: All the shops and business establishments are closed on Monday in remembrance of 23rd anniversary of Gaw Kadal massacre around the city. Heavy deployment was seen in Gawkadal and Maisuma areas.
The hartal call was given by People’s Political Party (PPP), Chairman, Engineer Hilal Ahmad War and supported by Hurriyat Conference (G).
War and Hurriyat ( G) had called for a shutdown in Civil Lines area of Srinagar City including Maisuma, Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma Bazar, Gawkadal, Kukarbazar, Saraibala, Gonokhan, Maharaja Bazar, Hari Singh High Street, Residency Road, Abi guzar, Exchange Road, Red Cross Road, and other adjoining areas on 21 January, 2013 to mark the anniversary of ‘Gawkadal Martyrs’.
At least 52 people were killed in Gawkadal on January 21, 1990. The massacre happened one day after Jagmohan took his charge as Governor of the state. (KMW News)
