Srinagar: Seeking help from chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Imams of mosques to stop power theft in the Kashmir valley, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has assured that the state government will take back two power projects from National Hydroelectric Power Corporation.
Despite directions from Mr Abdullah to Power Development Department (PDD) to improve power situation, frequent and unscheduled power cuts continued, evoking massive protests by the people.
Concerned over the worsening power scenario in the Valley, where people are facing severe cold weather due to drop in the temperature, the Chief Minister said yesterday that people’s cooperation was necessary to overcome the crisis.
He said some people are “indulging in power thefts” and did not pay their electricity tariffs.
He urged the chairman of HC to ask people not to indulge in power theft which is a sin.
Mirwaiz should use Fridays, when he address congregation at historic Jamia Masjid to educate people to stop power theft and using electronic gadgets which consumes more power.
Mirwaiz Omar in his last Friday address has criticised the government for failing to provide basic facilities, including power to people in the Valley when the temperature was sub-zero.
He also said Imams in the mosques should preach in Friday prayers to people to avoid power theft.
The civil society in the Valley has also criticised the government for failing to provide proper power supply to people.
Reports of massive protests against the frequent and unscheduled power failure were received from different parts of the valley. (KMW News)
