Srinagar: A major awareness campaign was being launched in Jammu and Kashmir to make people aware of their rights and privileges under the State Right to Information Act.
This information was given to Governor N N Vohra by State Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) G R Sufi at Raj Bhavan here last evening.
An official spokesman said during an hour long meeting, the Governor and Mr Sufi discussed several important matters relating to the role of the State Information Commission in furthering the interests of good governance.
Interalia, Mr Sufi briefed Mr Vohra about specific measures being taken for enhancing awareness among the people about their rights and privileges under the State Right to Information Act 2009 and, side by side, sensitising the public services cadres about their duties under the law.
Mr Sufi has been touring different parts of the state for the past few months, meeting common people, heads of the different departments and Public Information Officers (PIOs).
He particularly informed the PIOs about their duties to provide information to people within 30 days after receiving application from them, seeking details of any subject.
The CIC has imposed fine on several officials for failing to provide information within the stipulated time and also directed many government offices, besides Legislative Council, to give proper reply to information seekers.
